Most heavy machinery operates on diesel fuel and as such, the basics of diesel mechanics are a main component of heavy equipment training. Often, a basic course on diesel mechanics is typically required of those training. Among the main goals of the course are to be able to teach an operator on basic troubleshooting and maintenance procedures in case of a problem with the machine. Usually, this training saves a mechanic from being called out in the middle of the night simply because a piece of machinery needs the addition of something minor such as engine oil. Diesel mechanics for heavy machines is an education all unto its own; thus, extensive training is not usually offered in the course book for the general training course.

There is a wide variety of courses for training operators on heavy machinery. The more intensive training programs provide both hands-on machine operations together with classroom experience, providing a good amount of knowledge and training for students. A lo of courses offer both a a heavy machine certification upon course graduation and a diploma upon graduation. Training related to safety is a huge portion of all training. Courses such as crane school, that involve overhead lifting also, consist of hand signal courses and radio transmitting and receiving courses in the training. This training is essential because a lot of operators of forklifts and cranes lift and place pallets and equipment that they are unable to see. Most crane operation is carried out by an operator receiving hand signals from someone on the ground.

There are several locations where heavy machinery colleges have opened that focus on heavy machine operator education. Much of the training for the heavy machine is accomplished by the military. There are several former military instructors who teach programs in a civilian training class. There are various heavy equipment training schools which operate and own gravel businesses and they could have their students trained in an actual working quarry. There are other courses that lease space in a working quarry instead. These courses provide the quarry with labor that is free while the students are practicing and operating machinery.
